Online auction sites have revolutionized the way we buy things. Sites, such as e-Bay, offer fans of even the most obscure shows the chance to buy memorabilia that they would otherwise not find in brick and mortar stores. Online auctions also offer shoppers the chance to buy items at much lower prices. Such auctions, moreover, can be interesting to visit, since the items offered up for bidding can border on the ridiculous. Balls of twine, bubblegum chewed by celebrities, and makeshift furniture are only a few of the products that make online auctions a source of humor and entertainment.
You can also earn income from participating in online auctions. With the proper know-how and skill, you can succeed on e-Bay and earn profits from buying and selling your wares online.
Buying for Profit
As with brick and mortar auctions, e-Bay’s auctions consist of buyers and sellers. Sellers will post a starting bid from which all bids will take off. They can also post a “buy now price,” which allows a product to bypass the bidding process if a willing buyer is able to pay a face amount. Because the entire auction happens online, communication amongst buyers and sellers is limited to posting on the product’s site. Little is known about buyers and sellers until they come into contact with each other following a successful bid. At that point, negotiations on shipping and handling come into play.
You can earn money from purchases on e-Bay simply by purchasing items at a low price, and then selling them at a higher one through your own online store, or through your brick and mortar establishment. In order to succeed in this, you need to ensure that the product that you are buying is of the highest quality. Sellers on e-Bay are required to post pictures of their products as well as complete product description. Find a way to contact the seller if there is a product that you are interested in, and ask as many questions.
A legitimate seller will have nothing to hide. If claims of authenticity are made, ask to see certificates. Check for the product’s quality, and be wary of misrepresentation. Examine the seller’s track record as well. Most sellers who have been on e-Bay for a long time have an established reputation, and will oftentimes be more credible. Beware of sellers who seem desperate to sell off their products. E-bay is also home to scams, where people posing as sellers will take your money without sending the product to you.
If there is a product in which you are interested, do not start bidding on it until you have seen all options in the e-Bay marketplace. There may be products similar to it, or exactly like it, that are being offered at lower starting bids; or that are nearing the end of their auction runs. Shop through e-Bay as you would through a flea market: go from one seller to the next until you find the product of the best quality at the most reasonable price.
When you succeed on your bid, negotiate shipping and handling costs. It may be cheaper if you could meet the seller, especially if you live within the same area and if you are handling extremely fragile products. You can resell your purchase at the best price only if you take care of the product that you bought through the online auction.
Selling for More Profit
With the best marketing strategies, you can sell and earn money on e-Bay. Take very good pictures of your product: avoid extreme light, use a high-resolution digital camera, and post pictures that show the best angles of your product. If your product has scratches or damage, be transparent and honest enough to take pictures of it. In the product description, mention such blemishes or scratches, and describe the product as it is. If you do not want to purchase a misrepresented product, then neither will your prospective buyers.
Keep your “buy now” price reasonable: do not keep it too low lest you limit the extent of your auction, nor too high as too keep buyers away. For better results, have the price of your product estimated by an expert, and use a price slightly higher than that as your “buy now” price. This will allow you to have profits from your selling.
Answer questions posed by your prospective buyers, and be as polite as possible. Remember, it is you who needs their money, so make sure that you do not drive them away by mere temper. More importantly, look at their track record and reputation: as in sellers, there are scams that abound in e-Bay buyers. Some buyers may compel you to ship a product to them, but not pay you in return.
To survive on e-Bay, you need marketing and bidding skills. To make a good income, you need to actively buy and sell. If you keep your finger on the pulse of the market, and if you exercise your marketing clout without exaggerating or underestimating your product, then your e-Bay stint could definitely earn you the profits that you need.
