Alexa Site Gets a New Look

Wondering what is traffic rank all about?

The traffic rank is based on three months of aggregated historical traffic data from millions of Alexa Toolbar users and is a combined measure of page views and users (reach). As a first step, Alexa computes the reach and number of page views for all sites on the Web on a daily basis. The main Alexa traffic rank is based on the geometric mean of these two quantities averaged over time (so that the rank of a site reflects both the number of users who visit that site as well as the number of pages on the site viewed by those users). The three-month change is determined by comparing the site’s current rank with its rank from three months ago. For example, on July 1, the three-month change would show the difference between the rank based on traffic during the first quarter of the year and the rank based on traffic during the second quarter. via

You can check your site’s Alexa traffic ranking here. Although this tool still has a lot of room for improvement, it’s hard to look for another tool which is as popular in appraising a site’s traffic. It has a toolbar that you can put on your website to display your Alexa traffic ranking.

Going back to this post’s title.. Alexa’s homepage used to look quite a bit of a bore. But a recent re-design and supposedly usability tweak has been done that made the website look more spanking than boring. Its designers used some shadows on its header and the traffic graph sort of reshuffled the positions of its features.

However, why is it that some of the newer blogs don’t show their traffic reach even if they have lower traffic rank? By the way, if you’re using the Alexa traffic ranking tool a lower traffic rank means higher traffic.
